Honorable Chief Minister Appreciates the Initiative of Upanayan Ceremony for Girls… (2025)

The Upanayan (thread ceremony) of Kumari Meera, grand daughter of Kishor Lulla, founder of T.B. Lulla Charitable Foundation, and daughter of Amit Lulla, was recently conducted along with ten other girls. The ceremony took place at Sindhu Sanskriti Bhavan at Shyamrao Nagar, Sangli with the assistance of the Dnyanprabodhini, Pune.

On this occasion, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, conveyed his appreciation in a letter of congratulations to Mr. Amit Lulla. He wrote:

“I am delighted to learn that along with Kumari Meera’s Upanayan ceremony, several other girls are also being included. The Upanayan Sanskar (initiation ritual) during the formative years is considered significant for a child's educational and spiritual growth. Unfortunately, over time, this tradition faded for girls. However, girls too should undergo this sacred ritual. The efforts you are making to revive this important tradition and spread its value to others are truly commendable. My heartfelt wishes to Kumari Meera and all the other participants for a bright future.”

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kishor Lulla said, “The Upanayan Sanskar is essential between the ages of 8 and 12. In the Vedic tradition, even girls underwent Upanayan. Indian knowledge traditions had given them the right to chant mantras, pursue education, and perform priestly duties. There are references to women performing Vedic rituals and chanting mantras even in the Rigveda and Ramayana eras.”

During the ceremony, representatives from Dnyanprabodhini Pune guided the attendees on the significance of the ritual. The event included Vedic chanting and religious rites. Along with Gunjan and Amit Lulla’s daughter Meera, the following girls also underwent the group Upanayan Sanskar:

  • Swara Amit Malgave (Sawantpur Colony)
  • Priya Mahadev Bhosale (Tasgaon)
  • Anushka Avinash Pawar (Chinchani)
  • Mukta Sandeep Ballal (Madhavnagar)
  • Sai Sachin Handifod (Miraj)
  • Vedika Ravindra Yesumali (Miraj)
  • Swara Ravindra Sutar (Miraj)
  • Samruddhi Sunil Sutar (Sangli)
  • Shravani Balkrishna Javeer (Sangli)

Special efforts were made by the Samrasata Manch in selecting these girls for the ceremony.

Family members of the girls, as well as many notable individuals from society, attended the event, including:

Sanjay Kotnis Maharaj, Neeta Kelkar, Bharti Digde, Vinita and Shailendra Telang, Ravikant Patil, Vasant Apte, Rausaheb Patil, Ishwar Rayannavar, and several other businesspeople, entrepreneurs, and personalities from the educational and social sectors.

This innovative initiative is receiving widespread appreciation from all quarters.
